Smyrna Elementary and Down East Middle School
Title I Parent and Family Engagement Plan

Our mission is to prepare students to succeed in a changing world. In order to fulfill this mission to the utmost degree, parent support and cooperation is a necessary component.

  1. Parents are invited and encouraged to be on school committees that impact student learning
    1. School Improvement Plan Committee
    2. Parent Advisory Council
    3. Parent-managed PTO
    4. Parent-managed Boosters Club

  2. Parents will be given school information in a timely manner.
    1. School Report Card
    2. School Improvement Plan
    3. Descriptions of the NC Standard Course of Study
    4. Student progress reports and report cards/Powerschool
    5. Expected grade level proficiency levels
    6. Opportunities for parent meetings/conferences
    7. Title I requirements and guidelines; parental rights; notifications
    8. NC End-of-Grade test results
    9. Multi Tier System of Support (MTSS) meetings
    10. Timely IEP and 504 Meetings

  3. Parents will be invited and encouraged to attend regular parent meetings at convenient times.
    1. School Improvement Plan meetings
    2. Parent Advisory Council meetings
    3. PTO/Booster Club meetings
    4. Informational sessions designed for specific purposes
    5. Individual parent conferences
    6. Orientation to school (Open House) and to specific programs
    7. Coordinated Community/School Events
    8. Title I Informational Meetings

  4. Frequent and effective communication, both formal and informal, will be established with parents.
    1. All School Phone Messages for information/invitations to school events
    2. Parent conferences
    3. Classroom newsletters
    4. School and classroom web pages/Facebook pages
    5. Road signs with events posted
    6. Parent involvement activities
    7. Parent surveys
    8. Teacher and administrator phone calls
    9. ESL activities and specific programs (as needed)
    10. Title I budget and policies are available upon request

  5. Parents will have the opportunity to attend training to help them better understand how to help their children excel in school.
    1. Open House(s)

  6. Faculty and staff will encourage parent involvement and participation.
    1. Parent/Volunteer opportunities, appreciation events
    2. Field trip invitations
