Principal Rolanda Golden
Hello! I am Rolanda Lewis Golden. I was born and raised in Down East Carteret County. As a Carteret County Public School student, I attended Smyrna Elementary School and East Carteret High School. I began my career with Carteret County Public Schools as an educator here at Smyrna School over 30 years ago. I taught all grades K-5 during my first 17 years and then served as a reading specialist for 9 years. In March of 2016, I was named Principal of Harkers Island Elementary School. Then in August of 2017, I returned to Smyrna to serve as Principal of Down East Middle and Smyrna Elementary Schools.
After graduating from East Carteret High School, I attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where I obtained my bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. I also hold a master's degree in Early Childhood Education and a master's degree in School Administration, from East Carolina University. In addition, I hold Reading Specialist and Curriculum Specialist licensures. I obtained National Board Certification (2002) and renewal certification (2012) in the area of Early Childhood Generalists.
The Mission of Down East Middle School and Smyrna Elementary School is to prepare students to succeed in a changing world. Even after thirty-three years in education, I can truly say- I'm exactly where I want to be. The students are why I'm here- it's all about them! Please reach out if I can help!
